When it comes to where we stay when traveling, we must choose which is more important: Budget or luxury? Authentic adventure or assured comfort? Here is the spectrum available to the traveler:
Couch Surfing: Budget = Great. Authentic Adventure (and Risk) = Higher

CouchSurfing.org is a network of hosts and guests arrange for no-cost lodging worldwide. Based on goodwill and the kindness of strangers-turned friends, this service appeals to the 20-something traveler or the young at heart. Not limited to couches, the site lists shared rooms, private rooms and entire houses. Guests are expected to clean up after themselves and be gracious guests, but no money changes hands. Host interaction ranges from absent, to a local advice, to full tours (rare). Ratings and protocols help with the safety factor and to set expectations.
We agree there is no better way to experience the local culture than to stay with the locals. Nearly all guests rave about their hosts and have a favorable experience. We researched the handful of bad experiences and in nearly every case, some mind-altering substance or alcohol was a contributing factor.
Bonus: The site encourages local meetups and events for travelers. We think this is the best part.

Hosteling International: Budget = Great. Authentic Adventure (and Risk) = Good
Bunks to villas, hostels are perfect for on-the-go travelers who want shelter and minimal amenities and a rock bottom price. Bring earplugs and your own bedding and prepare to meet other travelers who find the touring experience to be more important than the lodging experience.
AirBnB: Budget = Good. Authentic Adventure (and Risk) = Good
Rent a room or entire home for a for significant savings. You’ll have some interaction

with the locals, but since you’re paying, you can also expect some privacy and a clean safe place to stay. AirBnB.com lists reviews and handles booking fees for you, holding your payment until 24 hours of your stay.
Alternatives: Homeaway and Roomorama
Hotels: Budget = OK. Authentic Adventure (and Risk) = Low
Hotels offer the most assured comfort and insulation from the locals. Want your space? Naps and a restroom anytime you wish? Daily cleaning service and someone to complain to? We book hotels for jet lag recovery and days before business meetings. Booking services and review sites are plentiful including tripadvisor.com and one of our favorites: Priceline.com.
For a trip over two weeks, we blend all venues. Hotels are great for first arrival. We ease into AirBnB rentals, and then are sure to couch surf a few places in every country. What’s your comfort level?
